Ports of Auckland Managing Director Geoff Vazey said:
“Ports of Auckland will continue to work constructively with the Government Rugby World Cup stadium working group. We have provided the group with detailed information on the vital New Zealand trade handled by the Auckland port and the essential port operations and capacity needed to support this trade, both now and into the future.
Given the need to handle this essential trade we believe it is simply not possible to build substitute port facilities so that the Bledisloe site can be freed up in time to build the stadium for the Rugby World Cup in 2011.
There are other sites on port land that the group is investigating; we will continue to work constructively with them while those investigations are being undertaken. These sites would also disrupt trade but not to the same degree of difficulty with respect to disruption to New Zealand’s vital trade.
