Pacific Peoples Policy and Action Plan launched

Manukau City Council, in partnership with the Pacific Island Advisory Committee, recently launched the Pacific Peoples Policy and Action Plan.

The policy and action plan provides a framework for Pacific Peoples to voice their aspirations, needs and priorities. It reflects the principles of Tomorrow’s Manukau-Manukau Apopo, council’s ten year guide to the future of the city, especially the collaborative spirit of working together to reach goals.

Manukau Mayor Sir Barry Curtis says “I welcome this partnership. It provides a framework for meeting Pacific People’s aspirations to succeed in all areas of life, for example education and health.

“Manukau is New Zealand’s fastest growing city and Pacific Peoples make up a quarter of our population. Pacific Peoples have made a huge contribution to the development of the city and have had some outstanding achievements in sport, arts and music. Now I’d like to see more Pacific People represented in industry and the professions in New Zealand.

“To achieve this we need to work together. The action plan sets out how we can do this over the next three years. I look forward to the development of council policies and services to increase Pacific Peoples’ capacity to participate in all aspects of life in Manukau”, says Sir Barry.

A copy of the Pacific Peoples Policy and Action Plan can be viewed on council’s website www.manukau.govt.nz (key words: Pacific and Policy)
