First parking tickets issued

The Kapiti Coast District Council has issued its first parking and traffic infringement notices.

“The Council’s Parking By-Law seems to have been tied up in consultation and discussion for so long that it may come as a shock for some people to find we are now enforcing the time limits and restrictions which are signposted throughout the District,” Council’s Team Leader Monitoring, Enforcement & Licensing, Rita O’Brien, said today.

The Council has warranted Main Security staff to issue parking and infringement notices. The warrants are issued under the Transport Act which means they are authorised to issue infringement notices for offences such as overdue warrants of fitness, overdue registration and overdue road user charges for diesel vehicles.

“In general though, there is a fortnight’s “grace period” for people to comply and to produce evidence to the Council that they have complied on those kinds of offences.

“Our main aim with the Parking By-law is to encourage people to move on reasonably promptly so that parking is freed up for others who need to use it for business, shopping and so on. We want to discourage people from “hogging” parks so others can’t use them.”

Most of the signs and road markings have been in place for some weeks. Some other signs will be installed shortly.

People should take careful note of the position of signs and time limits and can expect that they will now be enforced and tickets will be issued.

The parking between the BNZ and Coastlands main entrance is currently not time restricted while the Council considers other options. However, Rita O’Brien warns, other offences or illegal parking can still be ticketed in that area.
