Trees to get extra protection—Council.

Rodney’s trees are to get extra protection, thanks to rule changes to the Rodney District Council’s proposed district plan.

The most significant change is the introduction of general tree protection to exotic species six metres or higher in urban areas. Previously the protection was for native species only.

Changes also include general tightening of provisions controlling the cutting, damaging and removal of trees. On the coast, further protection is given to trees and vegetation within 10 metres of mean high water springs.

The council has also moved to clarify trees that are exempt from protection. They include trees identified as pest surveillance species under the Biosecurity Act 1993.

Councillor Grahame Powell, who chairs the council’s District Plan Committee, has welcomed the changes, saying that they are a worthwhile and practical outcome to the many submissions from the public and interested groups on the subject.

The council’s media manager, Mike Isle, says the decision notices outlining the changes and the reasons for them are now on the Rodney District Council website, www.rodney.govt.nz, under “Decision Notice 2256—Urban Modification.
