Ultimate is a sport using a flying disc (commonly called by the trademarked name “frisbee”), passed between team-mates up the field without dropping it or letting it go out, and attempting to scoring a point by catching it in the end zone. The other team gain possession by intercepting passes, or when the disc goes out or is dropped. Simple! It is described as similar to American football and netball, and is a fast, fun game of running, throwing and catching. Ultimate is self-refereed, so excellent sportspersonship is strongly encouraged and valued.
It appeals to all ages and genders due to the non-contact and mixed gender nature of the game. It is played outdoors in the summer, indoors on a basketball court in the winter, and at the beach whenever possible. Beaches are especially suitable for the spectacular "lay-out", diving like a goalkeeper to complete catches and interceptions.
Wellington has four local leagues, in three skill grades, each year. Many other centres also run their own leagues of this fast-growing sport. Each summer regional representative teams compete in the National Tour competition series. New Zealand representative teams compete internationally, with five NZ teams competing amongst 92 teams from around the world in last November’s World Club Championships in Perth.
Come along on Monday 22 January, bring your families, hats and sunscreen, and have some fun! Photographers welcome.
