Julia Wallace Honoured By New Retirement Village
Ryman Healthcare today announced it is perpetuating the memory of one of the Manawatu’s most distinguished citizens Julia Wallace for their new retirement village.
The Julia Wallace Retirement Village, in the prestigious Clearwater Park subdivision off Milson Line, will officially open in July this year.
Julia Wallace served 22 years as principal of Palmerston North Girls’ High School, was the first woman to become a city councillor, and dedicated her life to the community.
Her efforts were recognised in 1968 by her appointment as an OBE and she was awarded a Massey University Medal for being ‘one of the regions most distinguished citizens’.
“It is wonderful that the new Ryman retirement village is to be named after Julia. Her life was dedicated to serving the community, and she is remembered fondly by her staff and students,” Adele Barnett, Chairperson of the Palmerston North Old Girls Association said today.
The Julia Wallace Retirement Village will be home to over 200 residents and employ over 100 staff. The village will offer a range of options from independent townhouses, serviced apartments, and a care centre.
“The new Village is going to be something really special for the elderly in the local area, offering fantastic lifestyle options,” said Ryman’s Development Manager, Ray Versey, who grew up in the Manawatu and has family still living in the area.
“Julia Wallace set high standards and was devoted to serving others,” said Mr Versey. “These are attributes we value here at Ryman, and we are looking forward to offering our residents a high quality service here at the Julia Wallace village.”
The village is the 17th to be developed by Ryman Healthcare, a specialist provider of retirement village and care services to the elderly.
Ryman is a six times winner of the Australasian Aged Care Housing Awards for “Best Retirement Village in New Zealand”, most recently for its very popular Shona McFarlane Retirement Village in Lower Hutt.
