Niu Life Project Looking For Photographs From Pacific Community

Take a walk down memory lane. Are you a Pacific person living in Manukau city? Do you have old photos taken within the Manukau city region?

Manukau City Council Arts is seeking submissions of photographs to be part of an exciting new photographic exhibition ‘Niu Life’ to be exhibited in March 2007 at the Mangere Arts Centre.

Photographs could be of:

 Family events i.e. hair cuttings; birthdays; 21sts; graduations and weddings.
 Church functions i.e. White Sunday festivities; choral competitions; openings of churches.
 Village sports team events i.e. Cook Island village rugby competitions; Samoan kilikiti competitions.
 Cultural community events i.e. Secondary Schools Polynesian Festival; Cook Island Kia Orana Festivals.

‘Niu Life’ - Manukau’s Pacific People: A Photographic Narrative’ proudly supported by the Pacific Island Advisory Committee (PIAC) will reflect the chronological social history of Pacific People in Manukau city through photographs received from community organisations, private institutions and individuals from throughout Manukau city.

“We are asking Pacific families and the community for submissions of both old and recent photographs to be included in this exhibition” says project coordinator, and Otara artist Leilani Kake.

Your photographs must have been taken within the Manukau city i.e. Manurewa, Otara, Mangere, Papatoetoe, Botany, Howick and Pakuranga, any time from the 1900s to the present day.

“This is an exciting way to give your input into a new exhibition that will honour our Pacific identity, our stories and life in Manukau city” adds Ema Tavola, Pacific Arts Coordinator for Manukau City Council.

The deadline to receive photographs is Friday 9 February 2007. All photographs chosen for the exhibition will be copied and the originals sent back to their owner.
