Free beginner bike sessions

Free beginner bike sessions set cyclists on the right track

January 24, 2006

Free beginner bike sessions will be on offer at North Harbour Stadium during February in a bid to encourage more people to cycle around the North Shore.

All sessions will cover basic road safety skills, bike set-up and maintenance as well as a practical on-road and group riding component. As an added incentive for people to come along, there will be a special guest attending each session, to talk about different aspects of cycling which organisers hope will appeal to riders of all abilities. The sessions will be held at North Harbour Stadium and led by experienced local cyclists.

The sessions are perfect for those who cycled in their younger days and want to get back on the road, or the adult beginner wanting to give cycling a go, says Kit O’Halloran, transport development manager.

“The most important thing that can be learned from the sessions is how to be safe and confident on the road so that cycling becomes a more attractive and acceptable option for commuting, leisure time activity and sport. ”

“The North Shore is a beautiful place to cycle and this is the perfect opportunity to teach people the right skills to feel good about getting out there on two wheels.”

The sessions are the result of a partnership between North Shore City Council and the Devonport Xpressos with support from Harbour Sport, Bikewise, and North Harbour Stadium. Hedgehog Bikes Albany will be on hand to assist with bike maintenance and general set-up demonstrations. Avantiplus will also be assisting with bike maintenance and help newcomers with their riding technique.
Participants must have their own cycling equipment including bike, helmet, comfortable clothing, and water bottle and can either attend one session to learn the basics or all three for gentle progression.
