Waitangi Day Comes Of Age
Waitangi Day has come of age as our national day and is now a true community celebration that honours the Treaty of Waitangi.
That’s the comment from Waitakere Mayor Bob Harvey who was one of a number of dignitaries asked to speak at the dawn service at the treaty grounds in Waitangi by elders.
Representing towns, cities and mayors from around the country Mayor Harvey told those attending the celebrations at Waitangi local government was a vital link in the treaty process.
He said the treaty was realised in our towns and cities.
“We stand proudly on Waitangi Day acknowledging what’s gone before but looking towards the future where elected representatives truly reflect the partnership we all believe is needed to move this country forward,” Mayor Harvey said.
The Mayor added he thought there was definitely a different feel and vibe to the celebrations at Waitangi and in Waitakere this year.
“That clearly demonstrates New Zealand has grown up as a country, accepted its past and all that means and is going forward into the 21st century as a people united.”
Following his visit to Waitangi Mayor Harvey attended a Waitangi Day concert in his city (Henderson Park) featuring John Rowles which more than 3000 people attended.
“It was a sheer pleasure to wander around the park and see people really enjoying themselves and enjoying themselves for a special reason.”
