Swing, pronk and jump into the Zoo

Swing, pronk and jump into the Zoo

The zoo is challenging both children and grown-ups to get moving and grooving at its Active Movement Day on Thursday, 22 February, between 10am and 2pm.

Active Movement Advisors and Gymsport New Zealand coaches, who are specialists in working with pre-schoolers, will get visitors stretching like a giraffe, pronking like a springbok, and swinging like a monkey at some of the many fun fact stations located within the zoo’s 18 hectares.

At the Band Rotunda, activities will include crazy dancing competitions, animal aerobics, a fun obstacle course, and a bouncy castle for children to play in – all designed to encourage movement. In addition, there will be free face-painting, great spot prizes and giveaways.

Research shows that the experiences children have in early childhood play a large part in the lifestyle they adopt and the choices they make later in life.

“At Active Movement Day we’ll be encouraging children and adults alike to mirror the movements of our animals, which will not only give them a great workout, but will also be an opportunity for participants to learn some new things about some of the incredible species we have here at the zoo,” says Auckland Zoo events co-ordinator, Jackie Sanders.

Keep active everyday and help the planet:

Walk or cycle instead of driving
If you cannot walk to your destination use public transport or car pool
Take a walk on the beach or in the park and pick up any rubbish you see along your way
Plant native trees in your garden
Active Movement Day at the zoo is supported by SPARC, Sport Waitakere, Counties Manukau Sport, Sport Auckland, Harbour Sport and GymSports New Zealand. Normal zoo admission prices apply.  For more information visit www.aucklandzoo.co.nzor phone (09) 360 3805.
