Buses to use new Henderson transport hub from this weekend
Marking the next major improvement in passenger transport offering Aucklanders travelling out west, buses and trains will run adjacent to one another when the new transport Interchange is brought into action on Sunday 25 February 2007. The rerouting of most Henderson buses through the new transport hub at Railside Avenue next to the train station, follows the recent opening of the new Henderson train station and its kiss-and-ride zone.
Fergus Gammie, CEO Auckland Regional Transport Authority (ARTA) says, “Bringing buses and trains together in one location is an important step forward in terms of ARTA providing an integrated public transport system for Auckland.
“Once the next phase of double tracking is complete we can look forward to better connectivity between bus and train services in the area as a new train timetable with more services is introduced. When this happens bus and train passengers will really see the benefits of using the Interchange to move between road and rail services to get around the region.
Mayor Bob Harvey says, “The completion of the Bus/Train interchange is the final step in putting together the pieces of the transport solution in Henderson in one central location - buses, trains, taxis, kiss and ride and a high quality pedestrian environment.
“The project has been a model of partnership between Waitakere City Council, ARTA, ONTRACK and Land Transport New Zealand with each party contributing something important. The result is something the entire region can be proud of for decades to come.”
In the next year ARTA will continue its public transport improvements out west. As part of this it will be conducting some consultation to help better identify the travel needs of people in Waitakere and continuing to work closely with the region’s bus and train operators.
In 2008, Waitakere City Council will develop a park and ride on a site currently used for double-tracking project work.
As a result of rerouting most Henderson buses, there will be minor bus stop changes too.
