ARC registers interest in Stedfast Park, Piha
The Auckland
Regional Council (ARC) this evening resolved to express its
desire to acquire land at Stedfast Park, Piha, under the
Public Works Act 1981. This means that the ARC will enter
into negotiations with the vendor to agree on a fair and
reasonable price.
The 8.22 hectare property has been put up for sale by way of tender by the Boys’ Brigade Northern Regional Trust. For many years it has been used as an outdoor education facility.
Stedfast Park is located in the Piha catchment at the end of Glen Esk Road, surrounded on three sides by Waitakere Ranges Regional Parkland.
ARC Chairman Michael Lee says, “This Council is in a race against time to secure valuable open space for present and future generations of Aucklanders.
“We are entering into this process with the purpose of negotiating a fair and reasonable price – mindful that we must act prudently with public funds. Essentially, we are looking for a fair deal for the wider public good,” he says.
Chair of the ARC Parks and Heritage Committee Sandra Coney says the land holds important strategic significance for the ARC and the regional parks network.
“Stedfast Park is located at the key entry point to the Waitakere Ranges Parkland from the west coast. As the location of the old Piha Mill, it is a site rich in cultural heritage and ecologically significant native forest and birdlife.
“For decades children have been visiting this camp and the ARC wants to continue this tradition. City children can reach a bush and beach educational facility in under an hour and this is virtually unparalleled in Auckland.
“Our interest lies in continuing the existing camp use and enhancing public access to the Waitakere Ranges. If we are unsuccessful, we fear that this opportunity may be lost for good,” she says.
Following the notice of desire to acquire land under the Public Works Act, the ARC will begin negotiations with the current owner. This negotiation process must be completed within three months.
If agreement is reached, the ARC will continue with the purchase of Stedfast Park.
