Council Publishes Parent Pack.

PRESS RELEASE
OREWA 20th MARCH 2007.
AVAILABLE FOR IMMEDIATE PUBLICATION

Council Publishes Parent Pack.

Can a 14 year old be charged with committing a crime and brought before a youth court?

Can a parent be held responsible for paying for loss or damage to property caused by a child or young person up to the age of 16?

Do you know what Eccy, Bang, Burn, Go-eey or Texas shoeshine is?

The answers to the above questions and much more are now available in a toolkit for parents of teenagers which is being distributed across the district by the Rodney District Council and the Hibiscus Homecare Charitable Trust.

The ‘Parent Pack – Tools for the Teenage Years’ is a 30 page booklet which provides advice to parents and information to help when coping with the numerous issues that face teenagers in the 21st Century.

The pack is designed to be user friendly and easy to read with information for parents covering a range of topics including drugs, bullying, depression, alcohol and sexual health. The Pack reinforces the importance of parents listening to the concerns and questions raised by their teenage children and offers strategies to deal with potentially difficult situations. In addition the Pack includes the contact details of services available to Rodney residents that can provide further information and support to parents and teenagers.

The Parent Pack will be made available from a number of agencies that engage with parents and teenagers facing challenging life issues including Colleges, NZ Police, Child Youth and Family and Churches. Copies will also be available from the districts Citizen Advice Bureaux and other community groups.

Anyone who would like further information about the Parent Pack should contact the Council’s Safer Community Co-ordinator, Paul S. Green, on 0800 426 5169.

Rodney District Council acknowledges the support of the ‘Safe Waitakere Team’ at Waitakere City Council for their permission to use information contained in their Parent Pack released last year.
