Community Board welcomes Management Plan

Community Board welcomes Maungawhau – Mt Eden Management Plan

The Eden-Albert City Vision led Community Board is enormously pleased at the progress made on the Maungawhau – Mt Eden Management Plan.

Since the team was elected in 2004, the Board has worked tirelessly to find ways of cherishing Eden-Albert’s iconic maunga which has suffered from years of neglect under previous administrations.

The Board is particularly excited by moves to open up a centre for visitors to the mountain. “We look forward to the opening of an interpretive visitors centre so that people and tourists can learn the true significance of the maunga.” says Lindsey Rea, chair of the Board.

“We also urge Auckland City to find an environmentally friendly way to convey people to the top of the mountain who are not able or do not wish to walk without the need of heavy buses.” Buses are a danger to the fragile mountain, and the Board is concerned with finding new ways of bringing visitors and tourists to the top of the mountain.

While pleased at the work done on Mt Eden – Maungawhau, the Board is now turning its attention to the ward’s other iconic cone – Owairaka – Mt Albert, which, like its counterpart, has also suffered from inattention under previous council administrations.

“There aren’t many cities in the world with numerous volcanic cones dotting the landscape.” says Christopher Dempsey, Board Member, “It’s important that we pay attention to our iconic landscape – it defines who we are as Aucklanders.”
