Transit to begin safety improvement on SH1 at Waikanae

Transit New Zealand intends to widen a small section of SH1 at Waikanae to provide motorists on the southbound side a safe left-hand turning bay onto Kebbel Drive.

Transit Wellington Regional Manager Graham Taylor says work on this project will begin next week with the relocation of a power pole and a site survey. Once this work is finished, contractors will begin widening the road and carry out associated drainage work.

The pole will be relocated on Monday and Tuesday, April 23-24 with a temporary speed restriction of 50kph in place while the work is carried out, weather dependent. If the work doesn’t go ahead on those dates it will be done on Thursday and Friday, April 26-27.

Mr Taylor says the road widening and drainage work is due to begin on Monday, April 30 at the side of the road with a 70kph temporary speed restriction. All the work will be carried out on the shoulder of the road during the day, with minimal affect to the traffic. Two lanes of traffic will be kept available at all times.

Transit apologises for any inconvenience to motorists while this safety improvement work is carried out.
