Job losses at Fisher and Paykel disappointing

Manukau Mayor Sir Barry Curtis says the loss of 350 jobs at Fisher & Paykel Appliances to Thailand is very disappointing and he feels strongly for the impact on the workers and their families.

Fisher and Paykel is one of the largest manufacturing companies in Manukau and is located in East Tamaki.

Sir Barry says, as well as being one of the icons of business in New Zealand, the company has employed thousands of people and contributed greatly to the standard of living of many families in the city.

“But the decision to move its manufacturing base reflects the realities of world markets. It is very difficult to compete with low cost manufacturers in countries such as China and Thailand. Many other New Zealand companies are also feeling the same pressure and the high dollar is another factor making it hard to compete.

“However I am confident that Fisher & Paykel has looked at all options and will have come to this decision regretfully. I am sure it will do everything possible to place as many of the workers in other positions within the company.

“But it is important to remember that many Manukau businesses are crying out for staff and cannot fill vacancies because unemployment is very low. So I hope the workers who have lost their jobs will have a good chance of finding another position elsewhere.”

Around 300 jobs are created in Manukau each month and manufacturing is the largest business sector. “We are fortunate to have a strongly growing economy with 3500 new jobs each year,” Sir Barry says.
