Funding for folk music

North Shore City media release

Funding for folk music

May 14, 2007

The Devonport Folk Music Club can now provide workshops for young people to explore the different musical genres within folk music, thanks to a Creative Communities grant.

North Shore City Council recently allocated more than $51,000 in Creative Communities grants to a wide range of the city’s arts groups.

Deputy chairman of the council’s community services and parks committee, Peter White, says the grants support arts in the community.

“These organisations have built reputations in our community, often with a great volunteer support base and we’re delighted to support their activities,” says Councillor White.

Along with the Devonport Folk Music Club which received a $3000 grant, 17 other organisations including the Michael King Writer’s Centre, the Operating Theatre Company and the Lake House Trust also received funding.

Under a partnership agreement between the Government’s Creative New Zealand and local councils, funding is provided for the Creative Communities Scheme to support community-based arts projects.

North Shore City’s sector development officer for the arts, Sarah Dugdale, says the Devonport Folk Music Club Inc will use its grant to run workshops by various artists to demonstrate traditional instruments and music.
