Manukau presents
condolences to Samoa
Manukau city will be represented
at the funeral of Samoa’s Head of State, Malietoa
Tanumafili II on Friday.
A delegation including Mayor of Manukau Sir Barry Curtis, Cr Sua William Sio, and Kaumatua Haare Williams will attend the funeral on behalf of Manukau City Council, and the city at large.
Malietoa was one of the longest serving Heads of State and a regular visitor to New Zealand. He had a great fondness for Manukau, which is home to the largest Samoan community in the country.
Over the years, the bond between Samoa and Manukau has grown significantly. Sir Barry carries the Samoan title of Seiuli which indicates he is a Matai or chief. The title was bestowed upon him by Malietoa in 1993 in recognition of Sir Barry’s leadership and contribution in the areas of welfare and cultural interests of the Samoan and Pacific Island people of Manukau city. Only three people in the world carry this title.
The Manukau delegation will be joined in Samoa by the Mayor of Auckland Dick Hubbard and Auckland City’s PIAC Chairperson. The mayors will be supported by Cr Sio, who is a speaking chief and will conduct the formalities on their behalf.
Cr Arthur Anae has also arranged to join the delegation, at his own expense, and will provide accommodation in Samoa for Cr Sio and Kaumatua Haare Williams.
