Budget announcement on electrification a big step forward
Manukau Mayor Sir Barry Curtis says the Budget package to increase funding for public transport in the Auckland region is very welcome, especially the support for electrification of the commuter rail network.
“It is the circuit-breaker we have been looking for. Electrification is essential to upgrade our train services.
“It will allow the region to buy new electric trains that are much more modern and passenger-friendly, and replace the antiquated diesel trains.
“It will also provide for the extension of the current lines and I expect the result will be a much more attractive transport option, with many more people choosing to travel by train.
“I am pleased the Budget includes extra funding for public transport generally. However I look forward to more details being provided on the allocation and prioritisation of future services.
“I believe one priority must be the introduction of bus services to the Flat Bush area, because there are currently no plans for any services in that part of Manukau.”
Flat Bush is going to be one of the major areas of urban growth in the Auckland region in the near future, with an extra 40,000 people expected to be living there within five years.
