Get talking about cycling and walking
More well-maintained cycle lanes were by far the number-one request from cyclists at Auckland City Council’s annual Go By Bike Breakfast. Do you agree?
The survey at the event found that the other important issues were greater driver awareness and better street maintenance.
The council is asking for this kind of feedback on its proposed walking and cycling framework from today until 15 June 2007.
The council’s vision for the framework is more people choosing walking and cycling more often. It recommends measurable targets, practical methods and progressive strategies to create new, integrated facilities that will encourage people to choose sustainable travel options.
Transport and Urban Linkages Committee chairperson, Councillor Richard Simpson, is clear about the council’s commitment to creating better transport choices for Aucklanders.
“Auckland City Council is unswerving in its aim to promote walking and cycling as healthy and sustainable travel options. The proposed framework will ensure that we continue to improve existing walking and cycling facilities and implement new initiatives. It is important that we listen to what the public need and want,” says Mr Simpson.
“We have given serious thought to integrating sustainable transport and making it easier for people to choose the greener options. Walking and cycling facilities are important parts of transport infrastructure for an international city and in many cases they are key links within communities.”
Aucklanders can have their say on the draft framework by visiting www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/cycle completing the questionnaire or emailing cycle&walk@aucklandcity.govt.nz by 15 June 2007. Free internet access is available at all Auckland City Council libraries.
