WINTEC Offers Land For Regional Stadium

WINTEC Has Offered 1.5ha Of Land On Its Avalon Dr Campus For A New Regional Stadium

The Hamilton City Council proposal to establish a regional stadium in Hamilton was given a significant boost last week.

Wintec (Waikato institute of Technology) has announced it will contribute land valued at up to $3m for the complex if it gets the green light from Hamilton City Council.

The land offered is around 1.5 hectares and is on Wintec’s Avalon Campus.

Chair of Wintec’s Building &Assets Committee and Deputy Chair of Council, Clint Baddeley, said Wintec’s campus, on what is currently the northern outskirts of Hamilton City, has long been considered an ideal location for a range of community facilities, particularly with housing and other developments in the area.

Recently Sport Waikato announced that it will build its new $3m sport house on land provided by Wintec on its Avalon Campus.

“Wintec is fortunate to own this 56 hectare site and to house a community stadium on it would certainly provide a n appropriate opportunity for the institute to give something back to the city,” Mr. Baddeley said.

"I guess this is something for the council to think about, they at least have a partner that wants to work with them for the community. We believe that as the city progresses, we should put our hand up," he said.

The idea has the initial thumbs-up from top sporting executives, particularly Matthew Cooper, whose Sport Waikato organisation will soon be based at Wintec's Avalon campus.

Mr Cooper said the Wintec proposal was a good option for the city, and was pleased it would place any new stadium near Sport Waikato's new home.
