Standing room only at Save Crossways meeting
There was standing room only at last night’s Save Crossways meeting when over 130 people from Mt. Victoria and around Wellington packed Crossways to hear how the building can be saved from demolition.
The owners of Crossways decided at the end of April to sell the property. A campaign has been rapidly organised to save the building as a community facility, rather than see it demolished for townhouses.
“Last night saw the biggest turnout for a public meeting in Crossways’ history, said Save Crossways Campaign meeting organiser Iona Pannett. “There was strong support for retaining the building as a community centre and offers of help for the campaign have been flooding in since.
Wellington City Councillors present heard a clear message from the meeting that Crossways should be saved,” said Ms. Pannett.
Three motions were passed unanimously with the meeting affirming that they wanted Crossways retained as a community house, that the Wellington City Council should put money towards retaining the building as a community facility and that a Trust should be set up to raise money to save the building.
The Campaign will now concentrate on lobbying Councillors for funds to purchase the house.
