Cubs save dolphins, amongst other things…
5 June 2007
A weekend away turned out to be an experience of a lifetime for the Rimu Cub Pack of Mairangi Bay recently, when they found out first-hand what it was like to come to rescue of a (pod) of 80 dolphins. For the group of eight to ten year olds it was just the beginning of a typically action-packed weekend Cub Scouts provide.
The weather forecast had predicted a weekend of fine weather and the camp had a sea theme – fitting for a programme of sea and water activities that were planned throughout the weekend.
“No sooner had we settled down on the Friday evening, when we got an urgent call to save some dolphins that had stranded on Green Bay beach during a storm the previous night, not very far from our campsite,” says Cub Leader Dawn Clark.
“Taking our torches we searched the dark beach and found them all. It was a really exciting experience for the children and they gained first-hand and practical experience in conservation, which was great,” says Dawn.
Other activities that were jammed-packed into the weekend included before-breakfast fitness trails, riding flying foxes, waterslides, constructing campfires and cooking on ‘hobo stoves’.
The Cub Scout programme makes full use of children’s need for adventure. Games of all kinds, simple practical skills, sense training, outings and trips, stories, music, play acting and handicrafts are all combined to form a unique national programme.
