Time to register your canine companions

June 11, 2007

North Shore City media release

Time to register your canine companions

Dog registrations expire next month (July) so it’s time to re-register your canine friends. North Shore City Council’s environmental protection team leader, Warwick Robertson, says every dog over the age of three months must be registered every year.

“Making sure dogs are registered is a wise move as owners of unregistered dogs face fines of $300 or more, in addition to the registration fee for the current year,” he says. Registration fees allow the council to offer a 24/7 dog control service, free obedience training, a free responsible dog owner test, free education for dog owners and a free hotline to the council and animal control. “It is the owner’s responsibility to ensure the behaviour of their dog does not threaten other people’s safety.

“People can protect themselves by making sure they don’t pat dogs they don’t know,” he says. A prompt payment discount will be offered as an incentive to those who register their dogs and pay by July 31. You can register your dog by filling in a registration form which was sent out earlier this month to people with dogs currently registered.

You can now re-register online at www.northshorecity.govt.nz key word: dog licence. Registration forms are also available by calling North Shore City Actionline on 486 8600.
