Redevelopment plans for Avondale’s rail transport

Open day to present information on redevelopment plans for Avondale’s rail transport

Aucklanders can find out about plans to improve rail transport in Avondale by coming along to an open day next week. The open day is on Saturday 23 June at the Deaf Foundation Hall, 1836 – 1848 Great North Rd, Avondale from 10.00am to 3.00pm.

Avondale is an important part of Project DART, the Government’s $600 million upgrade of the Auckland rail network, and work is due to start later this year with completion in late 2008. The upgrade proposal includes redeveloping and moving the train station, to improve its connection with the town centre, and laying a second track.

Representatives from ONTRACK, the Auckland Regional Transport Authority (ARTA) and Auckland City Council will be on hand at the open day to discuss the plans and explain the likely construction impacts. Attendees will have the opportunity to give feedback on the upgrade plans which include:

  • Moving the station further west to better serve the local commercial and residential community and onto a straight section of track with room for longer platform(s)
  • Laying around 1km of new track to duplicate the Western Line from Avondale towards New Lynn
  • Future proofing the station and tracks for electrification

To minimise the construction effects such as noise, dust, vibration and traffic disruption the work will be carried out in accordance with consent conditions and a traffic management plan.
Anyone who uses the train, lives or works in Avondale is encouraged to come along to the open day to find out how the proposed upgrade may affect them.
