A splash of midwinter madness

AUCKLAND CITY COUNCIL

MEDIA RELEASE

19 June 2007

A splash of midwinter madness

Get ready to brave the cold and take midwinter madness to a new level at this year’s Mission Bay Winter Splash on Sunday, 1 July.

The annual Auckland City Council-organised event at Selwyn Reserve in Mission Bay offers an excellent opportunity to test the water temperature and enjoy family activities from 10am.

The event features a swim in the sea for those who are bold enough to brave the elements. Come in your most outrageous fancy dress costume and be in to win a prize.

There’s also a Big Dig competition, where kids can dig through the sand searching for brightly coloured discs to win prizes. Entry fee for the Big Dig is $2 and all proceeds go to the Auckland East Rotary Club.

Sarah Fairhead, Auckland City Council event organiser, encourages those daring enough to join in the fun.

“The Mission Bay Winter Splash is a permanent fixture on Auckland’s events calendar. Those brave enough to plunge into the winter waves are rewarded with a hot cup of tea and plenty of laughter,” she says.

This year’s Winter Splash is supported by the Auckland East Rotary Club, 91.8 More FM, Fergs Kayaks, Metromedia and Hot Cycles.
