Kids Bike Day back on
June 22, 2007
After a rain-enforced delay, the Shore’s ever popular Kids Bike Day is back and ready to roll on Wednesday, July 4, at Northcote’s Onepoto Domain.
Kids Bike Day is a fun bike activity day open to all North Shore City children aged between eight and 12 years.
North Shore City Council’s road safety co-ordinator, Helen Whittal, says the day is all about creating a fun environment where kids can improve their bike handling skills and road safety awareness.
This year’s event has more entertainment and giveaways than before - with free goodie bags for all participants, loads of spot giveaways, while one lucky child will win a brand new bike courtesy of Avantiplus Cycles in Wairau.
“We also have a fantastic MC on the day, former Squirt television presenter Jo Holley, who will be talking with kids and keeping the atmosphere fun,” says Mrs Whittal.
Police education officers, volunteers from both Avantiplus Wairau and North Shore City Council will run the event with the crew at BigFoot Adventures.
Registration and sign-in will take place between 9 -10am with activity modules kicking off at 10am sharp. All participants must be signed in and ready to start by 10am. Late entrants will not be accepted.
As participant numbers are limited to 120, organisers strongly recommend registering online: www.northshorecity.govt.nz to avoid disappointment.
This year’s event, like previous ones, will be free for North Shore families.
The day includes entertainment for all the family, with free face painting, a free fresh fruit stall courtesy of New World, bouncy castle, balloon sculpting, sausage sizzle and a unicycle demonstration.
All participants must wear a helmet and parents are urged to check that bikes are roadworthy. If unsure, you can have bikes checked for free at Avantiplus Cycles in Wairau before the event.
The North Shore City Council is committed to encouraging cycling as a healthy mode of transport for people of all ages.
In the event of bad weather, or for more information, please check with North Shore City Actionline on 486 8600, or visit the North Shore City Council website.
A rain date has been scheduled for the following Wednesday, July 11.
