Aucklanders proud of yachties’ quest

Auckland City Council congratulates Emirates Team New Zealand on their fantastic effort in challenging for the America’s Cup.

Speaking from Valencia, Mayor of Auckland City, Dick Hubbard, says, “The team has done us proud with their work in Valencia. Winning the Louis Vuitton Cup and pushing Alinghi to their limits in the America’s Cup final is a significant achievement and should be recognised.”

The 32nd America’s Cup has truly put New Zealand on the world stage, again profiling how talented our Kiwi sailors and yachting industry are.

Councillor Richard Northey, chair of the Economic Development and Sustainable Business Committee, says, “While we’re disappointed that the Cup is not returning home to Auckland on this occasion, we’ve enjoyed riding the wave of the team’s success.

“We hope Emirates Team New Zealand and other syndicates return to Auckland to use the extensive facilities available here to prepare for another challenge,” says Mr Northey.

America’s Cup fever has gripped Aucklanders over the past week and a half, as thousands of fans cheered on the team at the council’s live site in the Viaduct Harbour.

The big screen proved popular during the racing, with the City of Sails coming together to show their support until the very end.
