Parks purchase serves city’s north

The purchase of four sections in the Tall Oaks subdivision off Schnapper Rock Rd, Albany, will result in a larger park for local people to enjoy.
North Shore City Council recently bought the sections – totalling just over 7000sq m - for $2.99m.
North Shore City parks and leisure manager, Andrew Rutledge, says the four sections are strategically placed.
“We worked closely with the developer to buy land right next to what they had already given as part of the subdivision rules, so the purchase will create about 1ha of park in total,” he says.
“That’s in addition to two other smaller sections of reserve in other parts of the catchment, and land we have negotiated for links between these open spaces.”
These links will also make it easier for local children to get to school.
“We're now starting to think about setting up a walking school bus to get young people safely to Albany Junior High School nearby,” says Mr Rutledge.
The next stage is to work on a development plan for the new park, which will govern the mix of open space and activities provided.
“We hope people who live in the area take the opportunity to tell us what they want, after all, it’s their neighbourhood park and we want them to enjoy it,” he says.
Every year North Shore City Council has a budget of about $9m to spend on purchasing reserve land.
