Proposed new look for Auckland War Memorial Museum and cenotaph surrounds
Today's Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee endorsed a draft master plan for the Auckland War Memorial Museum and cenotaph surrounds in the Auckland Domain.
Aucklanders are invited to have their say on the draft master plan during the consultation period between 16 July and 10 August.
The plan proposes a number of changes and improvements to the museum surrounds, including: * replacing the car parking spaces below the court of honour with a water feature * a paved area in front of the museum and above the court of honour with steps and seating * complementing the museum surrounds with appropriate tree planting * better lighting of the cenotaph and the museum surrounds * enhancing the heritage and cultural values of the surrounds by highlighting the history and significance of the area * better pedestrian access through additional footpaths.
Councillor Vern Walsh, deputy chairperson of the Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee, says the council has been working closely with the key stakeholders to ensure the master plan addresses their requirements and also secures an appropriate setting for these important monuments.
"In developing the master plan, the council wants to provide a clear and coordinated approach to improving the museum surrounds and cenotaph, to ensure that it respects and enhances the cultural and heritage values of the grounds.
"We want to hear from people to ensure that what's proposed meets the needs and desires of Aucklanders so I'd encourage people to participate in the consultation process," Mr Walsh says.
The draft master plan includes an artist's impression of the proposed changes, details of completed renewal work and the main aspects of the upgrade.
Many of the proposed improvements will mean the museum surrounds more closely match the original designers' winning vision from the 1922 competition to design the museum.
A public exhibition illustrating the draft master plan will be displayed in the museum's foyer from 16 July to 3 August.
