Plan To Get Aucklanders Active -- Council
MEDIA RELEASE
Plan to get Aucklanders active
In a bid to get Aucklanders more active, today's Arts, Culture and Recreation committee meeting endorsed a framework to encourage participation in sport and physical activity.
"Active Auckland" aims to address statistics that show that more than half of the city's population does not do enough regular exercise to maintain health and well-being.
Councillor Vern Walsh, deputy chairperson of the Arts, Culture and Recreation Committee, says these statistics from Sport and Recreation New Zealand (SPARC) serve as a reminder of the importance of physical activity.
He says the challenge is to encourage those who are inactive to become active and to maintain the activity levels of those currently participating in regular exercise.
"Population growth, community diversity and changes in social activities and lifestyle choices are just some of the issues affecting people's involvement in sport and physical activity. Young people in particular are becoming less active.
"The benefits of participating in sport and physical activity for the health and well being of all individuals cannot be stressed enough and we want all members of the community to be physically active.
"This framework provides clear direction to encourage Aucklanders to become more active and offer opportunities for them to do so," he says.
The Active Auckland plan aims to get Aucklanders more active more often by:
* increasing opportunities to be active by working with AkActive partners to develop and deliver innovative programmes that meet the diverse needs of the community
* providing places to be active by developing and managing a sustainable network of quality sports fields, parks, swimming pools and recreation centres
* encouraging people to be active by raising awareness of the opportunities to participate in sport or physical activity for free or at low cost and developing initiatives to address affordability issues at recreation centres
* working together to be active by collaborating with other organisations in the sport and physical activity sector to improve the coordination and delivery of programmes that are important to Aucklanders.
The 45 actions outlined in the plan will be prioritised and implemented over the next 10 years.
