Storm stories wanted for historical record

Rodney residents affected by the unprecedented storm of July 10 are being encouraged to share their stories and photos with Rodney Libraries for historical record.

People can take their contributions to their local library until the end of September when they will be put on display then collated, catalogued and stored in a special historical collection.

Rodney was badly affected by the severe storm, which forced some people from their homes and left many without power for up to a week. It also brought people together, with many volunteers worked tirelessly through the night to bring aid and comfort to hundreds of people in the district.

The following morning, a massive clean-up campaign was launched and preparations made for the coming night. Rodney's libraries became a community meeting point, with many people coming in to keep warm, share their personal stories and use computers to contact others and keep up-to-date with the news.

Rodney District Council's library coordinator, Kris Wehipeihana, says the stories and photographs will provide a fascinating insight into the district's history for future generations, showing how local residents dealt with a ferocious storm and its aftermath. For more information on how to contribute, visit or contact your local Rodney library or go to www.rodneylibraries.govt.nz.
