Milk train season prompts warnings about extra rail traffic
Toll Rail’s milk train season this year is kicking off earlier than normal and the company wants to warn people in the lower Hawkes Bay, Manawatu, Wanganui and Taranaki region about the increase in trains on the rail network.
The first train starts on Sunday with one return train service travelling daily between Palmerston North and Hawera and another return trip each day between Oringi near Danniverke and Palmerston North.
Toll Rail in particular wants people in rural areas to be extra aware of the greater number trains going through level crossings in the regions mentioned as once the season gets fully underway in about 3 weeks time there will be even more milk trains using the network.
Once the milk season gets into full operation there will be at least 4 return trains coming out of Oringi to Palmerston North and 5 return trains between Palmerston North and Hawera.
Toll Rail warns people never to be complacent around the rail network as trains can run at all times of the day and night and to always remain vigilant when approaching a crossing.
