Celebrate our city’s heritage

The stories and secrets of Auckland’s unique natural, social and built heritage will be celebrated during this year’s Auckland Heritage Festival

Running from 15 to 30 September, the festival offers over 150 exciting events and activities across the city, most of which are free or ask for a small donation.

Programmes are now available for the festival. You can visit www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/heritagefestival for full details, request a copy by phoning 379 2020 or pick one up from any Auckland City library.

Events include guided walks and tours, exhibitions, open days, film screenings, harbour trips and family friendly activities. With everything from art and architecture to fashion and music, the festival will appeal to people of all ages and interests.

This year's highlights include:

• Deco divine: an Art Deco fashion parade

• Auckland City Libraries: Telling tales

• CBD slice of life: Come, hear and share

• Civic Theatre open days

• Classic film evening: Some Like it Hot

• Heritage Auckland High Tea

• Orakei Marae open day

• The great heritage quiz night

The festival is part of Auckland City Council’s ongoing efforts to protect heritage areas and buildings. It provides an opportunity for the public to celebrate their city’s distinct heritage and brings alive times and places of yesteryear.

Chair of the Environment, Heritage and Urban Form Committee, Councillor Christine Caughey, encourages people to learn more about the events and those who shaped Auckland.

“The festival is a great opportunity to uncover old places and forgotten spaces, and reflect on traditions that may have disappeared.

“The growing number of events show the extent of local stories to be told. By learning more about the rich history of Auckland’s past, we can build a stronger sense of place, identity and belonging,” she says.

The Auckland Heritage Festival is produced by Auckland City Council, with funding from New Zealand Community Trust, and support from Heritage Auckland, Solid Gold 93.8fm and Radio Live 100.6fm.
