Chamber to Scrutinise Candidates' Policies

Chamber to Scrutinise Candidates’ Policies in Local Government Election

The Wellington Regional Chamber of Commerce has sent a questionnaire to all mayoral and councillor candidates standing in the upcoming Wellington City and Regional Council elections. The questionnaire, which is attached, is designed to explore candidates' views on key actions and policies which we believe will enhance Wellington as a good place to do business in.

The Chamber will analyse candidates' responses and ensure that its members are well informed on where candidates stand on key issues affecting business.

With the local government elections approaching, the Chamber intends to pay particular attention to candidates' policies as well as the voting record and actions of the councils and councillors in the region.

Candidates were also sent a copy of the New Zealand Chambers of Commerce Local Government Policy Document. This document covers a range of local government policy areas which are designed to promote the interests of New Zealand as a whole as well as improve the business environment specifically.

"Wellingtonians need real talent running their city and regional councils," said Chamber CEO Charles Finny.

"The Chamber wants to see councils that are fully representative of New Zealand - it is not necessary for councils to be dominated by business people. But we do want the aspiration for better standards of living and a vibrant business community well represented on councils.

Chambers of Commerce in Porirua, Hutt City, Upper Hutt, Kapiti Coast and the Wairarapa will be sending the questionnaire to councils in their areas," Mr Finny concluded.
