Community invited to help plant out Whitireia Park
Everyone’s invited to participate in a mass planting effort at Whitireia Park in Titahi Bay!
A planting day is planned for Saturday, 8 September starting at 10am, organised by the Whitireia Park Board and the Department of Conservation.
More than 900 eco-sourced natives, including ti kouka (cabbage trees), flax and manuka, are ready and waiting to be planted as part of a plan to re-establish the natural character of the area.
Whitireia Park Board chair Alan McKenzie said the planting day was an opportunity for the whole community to help improve their park.
“Everyone’s welcome to join in. It will greatly enhance a popular area of the park, and it’s good fun as well!”
Volunteers are asked to meet at the car-park at the end of the park road in Onehunga Bay; near the toilets, and to bring a spade and gloves. Planting will be concentrated in and around a swampy area, so gumboots are advised!
Whitireia Park, in Porirua City, is a headland with wonderful views over Mana Island, Porirua Harbour and its environs.
The park comprises around 180 hectares of mainly open grasslands with a remnant patch of native bush. Administered by the Whitireia Park Board as a recreation reserve, it provides a unique place for people to undertake activities, like walking, mountain biking and fishing.
