Public feedback essential in CBD streets and open spaces projects

Auckland City Council recently obtained public feedback on its draft design for St Patrick's Square and is now asking for comment on its draft designs for the Victoria and Albert street upgrades.

Special Projects group manager, Jo Wiggins, was pleased with the level of support for the St Patrick's Square design.

"A number of key themes emerged through the consultation with public and stakeholders and we will consider these in finalising the concept designs for the square," she says.

Generally, people felt the design will:
* enhance the square's unique character, and its relationship to St Patrick's Cathedral
* improve the square's role as an urban oasis, a place for people to meet and gather
* improve access for people into and through the square
* improve the safety and comfort of the square.

The council will consider the feedback, along with other needs such as keeping within the project budget, when making amendments to the final concept design.

The Urban Strategy and Governance Committee, which would usually approve final concept designs, will have their last meeting before the local body elections on 6 September 2007. At this meeting, the committee will be asked to delegate the authority to make a decision on the St Patrick's Square design to the CBD Board. Public consultation on the draft designs for Victoria and Albert streets commenced today.

One of the key objectives of the project is to improve pedestrian safety and amenity whilst maintaining the function of the streets as major passenger transport routes.

"Many people use Victoria and Albert streets every day to get to work, go shopping, visit bars and cafes or access CBD apartments. It is important people let us know what they think about our plans for the streets, so that we can identify their specific needs," adds Jo Wiggins.

An information display will also be set up on 10 and 11 September in the Victoria Room, level 6, Crown Plaza Hotel, 128 Albert Street, central city between 10am and 7.30pm.

Public consultation for Victoria and Albert streets closes at 5pm on Monday, 24 September, 2007.

These projects are part of Auckland City Council's 10-year action plan for the CBD and are contributing to making the CBD a vibrant centre for everyone to enjoy.
