Chamber Welcomes Quality Regulation Review

Chamber Welcomes Quality Regulation Review

The Wellington Regional Chamber of Commerce has welcomed the announcement of government measures to minimise the impacts of regulation on business of new rules but still supports Rodney Hide’s Private Member’s Bill which is pushing for further reforms.

We are pleased that the government is tightening up its processes to minimise the potential impacts on business of regulation.  These are positive steps in the right direction.  However, much more needs to be done said Chamber CEO, Charles Finny.

Regulatory issues are sited by business in our surveys as among the most onerous issues affecting business.  The scope of regulations causing concern is wide including the Employment Relations Act, OSH the Resource Management Act, the Holidays Act and ACC. These costs are not restricted to red tape or compliance costs.

Today’s announcement coincides with Parliament’s Commerce Committee’s which is sitting today in consideration of Rodney Hide’s Regulatory Responsibility Bill.

At the committee’s hearing of submissions today, the chamber argued that many parliamentary laws and regulations are of poor quality posing significant costs on business and the economy. The Bill aims to improve the quality of these regulations and minimise the undesirable side effects

“Not only is New Zealand business over regulated but that much regulation is of poor quality posing significant costs on the economy”, Mr Finny concluded.
