Transit to build “twin” for existing Plimmerton Weigh Station
Transit New Zealand is set to build a new Plimmerton Weigh Station as a twin to the existing facility on SH1 after awarding the contract to build the station last week.
Wellington Regional Manager Graham Taylor says the contract to build the new weigh station in between Pukerua Bay and Plimmerton on SH1 will ensure the Police have facilities on both sides of the highway. The existing northbound weigh station is closed to opposing traffic by a median barrier, installed as part of the Paremata to Plimmerton Upgrade.
“The Police need a southbound weigh station for trucks heading to Wellington given that they can no longer use the existing station on the other side of the road. This was expected when we built Paremata to Plimmerton,” Mr Taylor says.
Fulton Hogan was awarded the contract to build the new weigh station, for which construction will begin next month. The project is expected to take up to nine months to build and includes a new Police weigh station office and services, entry and exit lanes for vehicles, barriers, street lighting and provision for weigh bridge installation.
“We expect this work will be finished in the middle of next year, dependent on weather,” Mr Taylor says.
