New complex e-Merges

September 20, 2007

A major new development for Takapuna, including a 750-space public car park, has taken a significant step closer to becoming a reality.

North Shore City Council has agreed to enter into a conditional contract with developer Location Group to build a 30-storey mixed use complex including tower on the corners of Huron, Auburn and Northcroft Streets, (including the council-owned ‘Gasometer’ site).

The ‘Merge in Takapuna’ building will include more than 3500m2 of shops and restaurants, about 11,300m2 of prime office space, about 100 residential apartments and a public plaza. It will be Takapuna’s second-tallest building, at around 100m tall.

“We’ve reached an agreement with Location Group to buy the 750-space public car park component for approximately $30m,” North Shore City’s strategic projects manager, Simon Guillemin, says.

“After several years of negotiations, we can now assure the community that this project is going ahead,” he says.

“The cost has already been included in our City Plan, including money set aside in the Takapuna car parking fund. It will also be offset by the $12.5m Location Group has agreed to pay us for the site.”

Takapuna businesses and residents are expected to benefit from the boost in car parking in the town centre.

“We have been working for some time to address the parking squeeze in Takapuna, and this development will help in doing that,” Mr Guillemin says.

“The new building will have a focus on environmental sustainability and attractive urban design, and will create a vibrant new public space for residents, shoppers and businesses.”

The resource consent process for the development will begin shortly, but it is expected to be about a year before construction begins
