Cycle safety message wrapped in springtime fun

September 28, 2007

Make sure your bike is safe before you ride it, was the message ten year-old Nicolas Harywiseno took away from Kids Bike Day at North Harbour Stadium on Wednesday.

Nicolas, winner of the Black Thunder bike draw from Avantiplus, was one of 100 participants to attend the popular event, designed to encourage kids to get on their bikes and have some fun learning cycle safety tips.

North Shore City Council’s transport marketing and consultation advisor, Jade Lucas, says it was great to see so many children learning valuable, life-long bike safety skills while having school holiday fun.

“The atmosphere was electric, with MC Jo Holley entertaining the crowd, a magician, balloonists, face painters and a sausage sizzle,” says Ms Lucas.

The Avantiplus Wairau crew were on hand to check that bikes and helmets were safe to go, before participants embarked on six modules, including road rules, bike maintenance, an obstacle course and follow the leader.

Goody bags, spot prizes and snacks were received by all participants thanks to sponsors Healtheries, New World Hauraki Corner, North Shore City Council and Avantiplus Wairau.
