Car share scheme springs to life at Auckland City Council car parks
The Right Honourable Prime Minister Helen Clark along with Mayor Dick Hubbard launched the CityHop car share service today at the Britomart Pavilion.
The scheme is the first of its kind in New Zealand and allows members to rent eco-friendly vehicles by the hour from some Auckland City Council car parks in the CBD.
"This is a leading edge initiative that has proved very successful in other cities around the world. It's another way of providing more transport choices for Aucklanders," says Mayor Dick Hubbard.
"For a city like ours, where we're trying to promote public transport, we know people sometimes still need access to a car. I'm delighted that a local business has seized the opportunity and is making it happen.
"More and more people are opting to live in the CBD, and CityHop offers a great alternative for those who may need a car on occasions but don't want the cost or hassle of owning a vehicle.
"Our CBD has over a quarter of the city's jobs and CityHop gives people the flexibility to bike, walk or bus to work while still having access to car when and if they need one," says Mr Hubbard.
The Transport and Urban Linkages Committee vice-chairperson, Glenda Fryer, says that working in partnership with CityHop is another way of making efficient use of the council's car park facilities and thinking creatively about the role car parks play in our city.
"In our Downtown car park we already offer priority parking for environmentally friendly vehicles, free parking for scooters and mopeds as well as a dedicated area for cyclists. It's all about making it easier to choose more sustainable travel options," says Ms Fryer.
The CityHop vehicles are available for hire at the council's Downtown, Victoria Street and Civic car parks.
