Auckland Islands earthquake no tsunami risk to NZ
Analysis of data from the moderate earthquake that occurred near the Auckland Islands, about 475 km South of New Zealand, shows there is no tsunami risk to New Zealand.
The Director of the Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management, John Hamilton, said that scientists from the GNS Science convened tsunami expert panel and NIWA carried out the analysis.
The tsunami advisory for Southland and Otago has been withdrawn.
"We have been advised that the earthquake appears to caused sea levels on southern coasts to rise and fall by no more than a few centimetres," Mr Hamilton said.
"There was some confusion overseas between the Auckland Islands and Auckland city. The earthquake occurred about 475 kilometres south of New Zealand and caused no damage in New Zealand."
