Albany Highway set for upgrade

North Shore City Council is planning an upgrade of Albany Highway and is asking for community feedback.

Proposals for the upgrade include adding both on and off-road cycle facilities, upgrading the several intersections along the length, providing bus priority measures and sections of raised median.

“The area served by Albany Highway is one of the fastest-growing parts of our city,” North Shore City’s transport programmes manager, Chris Jones, says.

“This growth is putting increasing pressure on Albany Highway, and there are very few alternative routes in the area.

“There are also increasing numbers of school children travelling in this area, and we need to make sure young people can walk, cycle or go by bus to school safely.”

 At the moment, designs for the upgrade are being prepared. Traffic modelling techniques are being used to guide the design and decisions about construction timing.

Mr Jones says that the upgrade is an important project for the Council as it aims to deliver on objectives set out in the City Plan.

 ”While we are working to provide a safe road for all users, this project will create a real opportunity for us to significantly improve walking, cycling and bus facilities, thereby improving accessibility, reducing reliance on the car and helping address issues of congestion and pollution. Furthermore, we are working with urban design consultants, to look at ways in which we can provide a quality built environment.”
