SH94 Milford Road closed until Friday
Transit New Zealand advises the public that Milford Road on State Highway 94 will be closed at least until Friday morning due to rock slip clearance.
“We are now clearing the debris that came down on the road after yesterday’s earthquake and we hope that we will finish the job by Friday morning,” Transit regional networks operations manager Murray Clarke says.
In its effort to keep the road safe and open as much as possible during the avalanche season, Transit is also closely monitoring the risk of avalanches which is now at a moderate level but may rise to high risk level.
“We might have to look at undertaking some active avalanche control activities, including the use of controlled explosives, to remove the build up of the snow in the avalanche start zones,” Murray Clarke says.
The avalanche season usually lasts from June to November.
Up-to-date information on the condition of Milford Road can also be found on Transit’s Milford Road website at www.milfordroad.co.nz/RoadStatus.do.
