Home Sweet Heart

Home Sweet Heart

Home Sweet Heart, an exhibition at the Artstation Gallery from 2-14 November, explores connections between the home and the heart through the varied practices of artists Amanda A’Hara, Vicky-Anne Allen, Toni Carter and Sally Fausett.

Domesticity is a central theme in the exhibition, which includes photography, painting and sculpture. The artists do not simply dwell in the comfort of home – instead they reveal the potency of these familiar spaces. Home and heart become sites for conflicting emotions, offering both security and vulnerability.

Amanda A’Haraexamines “unashamed surburban sentimentality” in her work for Home Sweet Heart. A'Hara’s camera peeks over hedges and into bedrooms in an attempt to catch a glimpse of another life, from the faded glamour of garden ornaments to collectable knick-knacks and dusty miniatures.

Vicky-Anne Allen’s recent work references the tradition of craft within the domestic environment looking at notions of honour and preservation.

Toni Carter looks to transient domestic spaces. Her snapshots of open homes and rental properties she has visited capture “forgotten spaces”, through their recording of tastes and fixtures that represent another time and place.

Sally Fausett examines ordinary objects and spaces within the home to explore notions of ambiguity and unease. Fausett uses colour and light to heighten a sense of unease, in her photographs, projections and installations.
