National recognition for Environment BoP chairman

National recognition for Environment Bay of Plenty chairman

Environment Bay of Plenty’s chairman will be representing the Bay of Plenty at a national level following his appointment to Local Government New Zealand posts.

John Cronin been elected as deputy chair to Local Government New Zealand’s (LGNZ) Regional Affairs Committee and on to the National Executive Committee of LGNZ.

The National Council is the elected leadership of LGNZ and is elected every three years following the local government elections. It’s the only organisation that can speak on behalf of all councils in New Zealand.

The Regional Affairs Committee represents all of New Zealand’s regional councils and unitary authorities, providing a forum for them to work collectively on issues.

Mr Cronin said it’s a privilege to represent Environment Bay of plenty on regional affairs and an honour to be elected deputy chair.

“Further recognition by my regional council peers for appointment to the national executive committee is particularly pleasing.”

It’s his second term as deputy chairman on the Regional Affairs Committee.

He said two of the issues he’ll be taking to the committee are transport and climate change.

“It’s a chance to discuss issues about our environment, however transport and climate change are the big issues for this region so I’ve got a particular interest in them. It’s an opportunity for me to take these views and issues to a national audience.
