Iwi Splashes Out at AGM
Ngati Kahungunu Iwi created some giant waves last Saturday when they combined their AGM and annual Pa Sports Day at Splash Planet.
“Our members voted with their feet, making this the biggest turnout we’ve had in years for our AGM”, said Ngahiwi Tomoana Chairman of Ngati Kahungunu Inc, “The whole day was a great success and we’re thrilled.”
Over 200 attended the early morning AGM and many stayed on to enjoy the rest of the day at the popular water theme park.
“The AGM was exciting and exhilarating”, said Ngaikiha Tawhai. “ It was a wonderful day and my girls had an awesome time on the slides.”
Over 900 players in 82 teams from 17 Kahungunu marae competed in team sports including netball, touch, volleyball, tug of war, putt putt golf and euchre. Tug of war was a fitting highlight to the day with Korongata emerging the overall winners.
Larry Jessup an organiser for Hurunui o Rangi Marae from Wairarapa said, “I’d like to congratulate the organisers. From last year to this year it has improved and grown hugely”.
1500 tribal members and their families joined the players filling Splash Planet to capacity for the day.
“It was a wonderful day for our people”, said Ngahiwi, “This has become an event that no one will want to miss”.
