Whether you’re a surfer who wants to know what the waves are doing, a farmer needing to know what the moisture levels of your soil are, or just wondering whether river levels are going to be good for fishing, www.envbop.govt.nzis a site every household needs to bookmark.

Glenn Ellery, manager of environmental data services at Environment Bay of Plenty says it’s great that this information can now be accessed easily by anyone with an internet connection.

“This is another step in delivering our services and information to the community in a quick and effectiveway,” he says.

“We’ve had basic monitoring information on our website for a few years, but this really takes it to the next level. The wave buoy has always been popular with surfers and boat users, and with the expanded information we’re hoping more people will benefit from it, for an even wider variety of reasons.”

The website displays a selection of 60 monitoring sites from around the Bay of Plenty. Information collected includes meteorological conditions, rainfall, air quality, tide, river levels and river flow information, as well as soil moisture information that should prove useful to farmers working out the best time to spray effluent on their properties.

Mr Ellery encourages people to take a look, whether they be students needing information for a school project or a multisporter needing to know what river levels are like.

“Information is updated between every one and four hours, depending on the monitoring site,” he says. “Historic information is also available, letting people compare details to the past week, month or year.”
