Auckland City Mission Appealing for Support

This Christmas the Auckland City Mission is appealing to Aucklanders to help them make Christmas happen for every Auckland child. With just over a week until Christmas Day, donations are well down on previous years.

The Mission desperately needs more items for their Christmas food hampers, more presents – especially for teenage children – and more money, to make sure everybody has something to celebrate this Christmas. The Mission gives out food parcels to 3,500 people during December and 700 Christmas hampers; it distributes 25,000 presents to children and organises New Zealand’s biggest Christmas Dinner, in the Auckland Town Hall.

“We will not let anyone go away empty-handed, but it is becoming increasingly difficult,” says Auckland City Missioner Diane Robertson. “We want to make sure every child has good food on the table on Christmas Day, that the homeless have somewhere to go and the elderly will not be alone.

“For us to do this we need Aucklanders to give one final push to our Christmas Appeal and make up for the very slow start in donations,” she says. “Without their generosity we won’t be able to make Christmas a time of celebration for all Aucklanders. The Christmas Appeal is our largest fundraising drive and we rely on these funds to continue our work assisting those in Auckland who are most marginalised and most in need throughout the year. So our Appeal is not only vital to our work over Chrismas but also at the start of 2008. We know from past experience that Aucklanders are very generous, so are asking them please don’t forget the Mission this Christmas. ”

Donations can be posted to Auckland City Mission, PO Box 5352 Wellesley Street, Auckland, or made online at www.aucklandcitymission.org.nz. Contributions of Christmas presents and food for Christmas hampers can be delivered to the Auckland City Mission, 140 Hobson Street; or phone 379 2395 to arrange for collection.
